I would really like to repair this file, so just in case someone who knows how to fix this sort of thing, I've shared the file here. I have read on one of these forums (I can't seem to find it anymore) that someone had a similar issue and someone helped them through a lot of digging around in the broken file (something to do with headers?).and in the end they managed to repair the broken DMG file. Repair in File Salvage (this actually recovered a single mp3 file, so this makes me think the data is still there) converting the DMG in Disk Utility to a R/W image.
